With the most charging stations in the Franconian metropolis, innovative services, and a customized pricing structure, ParkRaum-Management PRM GmbH (Erlangen) and Wattif Europe GmbH (Braunschweig) have transformed the Plärrer parking garage into Nuremberg’s most e-mobility-friendly parking facility through a successful partnership. Just eight months passed from the project’s start to its completion—and ongoing operations were never disrupted. PRM, as a provider of innovative digital parking solutions, and Wattif, as a specialist in setting up modern charging infrastructure, collaborated closely to demonstrate how quickly and easily parking garages and lots can be made ready for the electrified future. The “Am Plärrer” parking garage on Gostenhofer Schulgasse is one of the city’s most important parking facilities simply because of its location at one of Nuremberg’s busiest intersections, right next to downtown, and is also very popular due to its affordable parking rates of 2 euros per hour. The parking garage offers 350 parking spaces and is used by visitors as well as private and commercial tenants. The parking garage is managed on behalf of the owner by PRM, which has optimized operations in recent years through numerous measures, including the introduction of free-flow parking via license plate recognition—to ensure optimal utilization and a convenient parking experience.
Expansion of EV Charging Infrastructure: The Next Logical Step
To create optimal conditions for electric vehicles in the parking garage, PRM has partnered with Wattif, a full-service provider of commercial EV charging infrastructure. Klaus Gumpp: “Our goal was to install 20 charging points on the second basement level, including a designated parking space for people with disabilities. On the one hand, because we’ve seen increased demand from tenants, and on the other, because we wanted the parking garage to be a pioneer in Nuremberg. Wattif impressed us with its expertise and approach, and the collaboration went exceptionally well throughout the entire project phase.” On average, Nuremberg’s parking garages have had just 4 to 6 charging points so far.

However, beyond the large number of charging points, it is the charging experience itself that makes the biggest difference for users. Henrik Czech explains: “We focus on what’s known as destination charging, which means the car is charged continuously while parked. This way, the time the car is stationary is put to good use. Furthermore, a straightforward and pleasant user experience is crucial. This begins with the visibility of the service well before arriving at the parking garage and continues with a simple charging process all the way through to customer support.” That is why the charging points are listed in all popular e-navigation and roaming apps. Inside the parking garage itself, a guidance system ensures clear navigation. A three-step guide guarantees a safe charging process, and a 24/7 hotline is available in case of questions. A customized charging model for different user groups enhances convenience. For example, the blocking fee has been waived for tenants, which, among other things, enables convenient overnight charging.

That’s why specialized expertise is essential here. “Our expertise in the digitalization of parking management, combined with Wattif’s expertise in charging infrastructure, provided the optimal solution here.
