Free parking for electric vehicles in Bavaria does not apply to private parking spaces
With a groundbreaking decision, the Free State of Bavaria aims to make e-mobility even more attractive. Starting today, vehicles with “E” license plates may park for free in public parking lots throughout Bavaria—for up to three hours. However, owners of electric cars should note that this decision does not apply to private parking lots.
The regulation applies to all vehicles with an "E" in their license plate—that is, fully electric vehicles, hydrogen-powered cars, and so-called plug-in hybrids withCO2 emissions of less than 50 grams per kilometer and an all-electric range of at least 40 kilometers.
Excluding private parking spaces
Important: This regulation applies to public parking spaces—that is, traditional “street-level parking spaces,” parking spaces on side streets, and all spaces marked by a blue “P” traffic sign. Parking is limited to a maximum of three hours and must be indicated by a parking disc. Parking is not permitted free of charge in private parking spaces. This generally applies to all parking lots with barriers, parking garages, or designated parking spaces. It also applies to modern parking garages and lots that use license plate recognition for billing or are monitored by cameras. Drivers should therefore read the instructions on the parking meter or look for signs at the entrance to parking lots.
Parking spaces managed by PRM are always private parking spaces and are marked as such; therefore, they are exempt from this new regulation, which is initially set to remain in effect until the end of 2026.
